Preparing NYSSMA Videos

Videos for the 2021 NYSSMA Solo & Ensemble festival may be prepared by the student at home, with their private teacher, or with their school music teacher. All videos must meet the following requirements:

  • Students will prepare a separate video for each element required (scales, solo, rudiments, improvisation, etc.)
  • All videos must be a single, continuous file. Scales and multi-movement works should be edited together into one file.
  • Videos may not contain any effects, alterations, filters, titles, or other similar elements.
  • Videos may be in .mp4 format, WebM format, or HEVC format (from iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad). For other file types, you can convert your videos here.
  • Each individual video must be smaller than 250MB
Completed videos should be uploaded to your OneDrive account and shared with your school music teacher who will upload it to the system for you.
*Piano festival participants will share their videos with Mr. Brian Kroll, FPA Director who will be uploading all Piano Festival videos.

All NYSSMA participants must provide their school music teacher with a copy of their solo two weeks before their respective festivals.

Area 2 All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival

Syosset Harp Festival (No Harp in Zone 14)

Upload Dates: Friday, April 16 & Monday, April 19, 2021

Islip-East Islip Satellite Festival

Upload Dates: Thursday, April 29 & Friday, April 30, 2021
Registration Deadline: Thursday, April 1, 2021

2021 NYSSMA Virtual Solo & Ensemble Evaluation Festivals will follow all Rules and Regulations listed in NYSSMA Manual, Edition 32. With the exception of scales and rudiments and other items outlined in this informational document, all Manual Rules and Regulations will apply.

Sight reading has been eliminated from the 2021 NYSSMA Virtual Solo & Ensemble

Evaluation Festival Season Solo Length – For the 2021 virtual festival season: – All repeats and Da Capos ARE required for level 1-3 solos and ensembles. – All repeats and Da Capos are NOT required for level 4-6 solos and ensembles.

To perform for the 2021 NYSSMA Virtual Solo & Ensemble Evaluation Festival, students will do the following:

Platform Upload Tasks:

Task 1: Registration Information to be completed by student

Task 2: Upload PDF of the music (as many pages as necessary all need to be combined Into one PDF file).

Task 3: Upload either Scales or Long Roll & Rudiments (snare drum), Roll and Tuning (Timpani)

Task 4: Upload performance of Solo (one continuous file)

Task 5: Improvisation – Instrumental and Vocal Jazz. (Drum Set completes Task 6, not Task 5)

Task 6: Drum Set only – styles and improvisation requirement.

Scales:

Task 3 required three scales or rudiments for snare drum are listed in this document. Timpani tuning requirements are listed in the NYSSMA Manual. Students will pre-record their scales, snare drum rudiments, or timpani tunings, and upload to complete Task 3.

Comments Only

Comments Only will be available to students when they register.

Students with Disabilities

Students requiring a Student with Disability accommodation will indicate that need when they register. Teachers as always, are obliged to complete the Students with Disabilities form carefully noting at the bottom of the form the accommodations requested. The form must be sent to the Zone Representative by the Registration Deadline (scan and send is fine). For All-State students the Students with Disabilities form must be sent to the 2nd Vice President.

Accompaniments

All voice and all All-State solos will require accompaniments. Formats used for recorded accompaniments at onsite festivals can be used with the same recommendations. The information on page R-8 and 7-1 of the NYSSMA Manual will apply to virtual evaluations.

Small Ensembles

Small ensembles will be included in the 2021 NYSSMA Virtual Evaluation Festivals. All information listed in the NYSSMA Manual pages R-19 – R-21 will apply to virtual evaluation festivals.
